Birthday Cake

I do dislike blowing candles
From a pastry in bright decor.
It reminds me of the melting days
And how quickly can time run out.
The flame of youth may still be upon us,
But I could not desire anything more
Than to add but a few more years
To the quickly burning wick of my life.
But, alas, we can simply close our eyes
And wish upon a whim
Before the flame of age is snuff out
By the cold breath of Death

Let the inquisitors ask,
And the schlars ponder.
Let the demons tempt us,
And let the angels of heaven save us.
Let the drunk be merry,
And let the abstinent know no bliss.
Let me be with my morals and virtues
And I will leave you be.
